Freerice.com - Feed the hunger

Feeling guilty about wasting your time playing online games? Now, let us introduce to you a guilt-free game that does not only satisfy your gaming needs but also helps to feed the hunger.

Freerice.com donates rice to starving people worldwide every-time you guess the correct meaning of a random word. Not only do you learn, but you also feed someone who desperately needs it.

FreeRice is the brainchild of John Breen, founder of Poverty.com and TheHungerSite.com. The concept here is ridiculously simple:

1. You answer multiple choice questions that test your vocabulary

2.Advertisers pay FreeRice to place ads on the web pages alongside the questions

3. The advertisers’ money pays for the rice

4. The more questions you answer—and the more ads you eyeball—the more rice you’re able donate

Unlike most other charities, you don’t have to spend any money in order to help alleviate hunger. All you need is your brilliant vocabulary (or online dictionary...hehe...)
WARNING: This game may make you smarter. It may improve your speaking, writing, thinking, grades, job performance...

Turns out FreeRice’s creators aren’t sitting on a pile of rice counting out the grains each time you get an answer right. Instead, FreeRice gives the money it gets from advertisers to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), which in turn uses the cash to buy rice for the needy in impoverished areas.

Since it’s launched, FreeRice has donated 2,840,667,010 of them, which is 130,470 pounds of rice.
We encourage you to visit the site and help the starving children in the world.
Here is a challenge to you .
Go to Freerice.com, play the game and tell us how many grains of rice you have donated in the comments below.
EXTRA: Check out how Freerice being distributed.

Hello hairstylist!

Hello hairstylist! is a charity project to raise fund as a part of Young Mercy subject requirement. Anuar(YM2) and I, Afizy (YM1) gave away the opportunity to cut our hair to all CUCMS student as well as lecturer (who were so eager to cut our hair for a long time!) and staff.

Every cut cost the person RM2. The idea came to me when I was thinking of how I can raise fund without any expenses. Thus, I came with this wild idea which is creative and never been done before in CUCMS.

At the end of the day, both of us went bald and we were given the name BO & TAK. Sounds funny right but then we were satisfied because we manage to collect RM112 which is very impressive I suppose. All the money will be donated to the Young Mercy. Anuar and I were very proud of ourselves. Everyone enjoyed cutting our hair.

Notice the difference in their smile...before and after?

For more pictures, please visit our Young Mercy Gallery.

Note: To members of YM1, YM2 would like to thank you guys for your collaboration. Together, we can make the world a better place. =)

It's time for SPRING CLEANING

We mentioned about our recycling project in a previous post and the response was good but we need more support from our fellow CUCMS students and staff.

You know it is time to clear up the trash from your room when there are more empty bottles and cans than your books or when you are having a hard time finding your car keys under the piles of papers on your desk. So, use your free time to clean and bring the recyclable products to college.

If you are not from CUCMS, please contact Victor Lim at 016-3408117.

All profits will go to our future projects to help those in need.

NOTE: To those who want to volunteer in this programme, please email ym2cucms@yahoo.com

Dedication Booth at CUCMS

Dedication Booth is another minor project that is carried out by YM2. For RM3, they can give a greeting card together with a gift to that special someone. The committee members will then personally hand in those goodies to the lucky recipients each week. This service is not only limited to among the students; mentors can also use this chance to treat their mentees. Other than that, this can also be another way to give birthday treat and also letters for the logbook.

Through this project, we hope the CUCMS-ers will be able to work and study together in a harmonious and friendly environment. Besides that, this also gives the opportunity to put smiles towards those whom they care about.

Funds generated will be allocated to the orphanages chosen by the YM2 and also for future YM2 projects.

Take our poll : Have you ever participated in voluntary work?

Spirit of Volunteerism : Maran Flood Relief 2007

You have seen news reports about people who need assistance after a natural disaster or animals in need. Or perhaps you've watched TV programs about how lonely and isolated older people can get.

So what can you do about any of those things, you ask? The answer: You can volunteer.

Volunteering gives you an opportunity to change people's lives, including your own. Volunteering and giving from your heart can be very rewarding. If you'd like to support a cause but can't afford to donate money, you can donate your time and energy instead.

So how do you go about it?

Take our poll and leave your comments here. We would love to know what you think about volunteerism.

An Introduction to Young Mercy

Why are we here?

The Young MERCY programme is one of the co-curricular activities of Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences (CUCMS) where an early exposure to volunteerism is instilled. The Young MERCY programme for year 2007/2008 is made up of 2 smaller groups; the Young MERCY 1 and Young MERCY 2. It comprises the medical and pharmacy students of the Year 2.

This group is established in the hope of following the footsteps of the already established MERCY Malaysia. Other than just being medical students, we are expected to be able to develop concern and care towards the society. This in line with the motto of our own university, Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences (CUCMS) which is “Nurture the Passion to Care”

Our main objective is to make a difference by serving to the community in terms of health care. Currently, we, the Young MERCY 2 are in progress of holding a charity health carnival which will be held in Shah Alam in April this year. Funds generated through this carnival will be allocated for the needy.

Through this practice, we hope we will not only end up being good physicians in the future but as well, to be responsible citizens who have the spirit of volunteerism, humanism and passion to care for the nation.

Note:

You can help us make a difference by making a donation to Young Mercy. This fund will enables us to carry out volunteer and humanitarian programmes to numerous communities in need. If you wish to donate, please email us at ym2cucms@yahoo.com
